Earlier today a press conference was held to announce additional matches for the biggest event of the NJPW calendar, Wrestle Kingdom 13 on January 4, 2019, in the Tokyo Dome.
In addition to the already-determined IWGP Heavyweight Championship main event between Kenny Omega v. Hiroshi Tanahashi, the IWGP Intercontinental title will also be on defense, following Tetsuya Naito’s challenge to Chris Jericho at the conclusion of Power Struggle on Saturday. Jericho is still claiming he is not accepting this challenge despite the match being booked, however we all know it will happen one way or another. I just wonder if this year, the match with Jericho will be a “double main event,” or nah cuz Kenny Omega isn’t in it. I bet I know the answer.
There will also be a special singles match between Kazuchika Okada v. Jay White, as the continuation of that feud. KUSHIDA will defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight belt against Taiji Ishimori as well (assuming he’s back from injury in time).
As if Saturday’s wasn’t enough, there will be another 3-way match between the reigning IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team champions Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado, Roppongi 3K, and BUSHI & Shingo Takagi. Only this time for the titles. So… what was the point of the Super Jr. Tag League then? Yes, it’s great SHO & YOH won it, but what was the point if they make the title match a 3-way again? I’m beginning to know how TheCubsFan feels about trying to make heads or tails of CMLL’s booking, only instead it’s NJPW booking. Crikey.
The World Tag League lineups are not announced yet. Looking at the WK13 card so far, if they follow the same pattern as last year, you can pretty much guess who will not be participating in the Tag League. I have a sinking feeling I know some names who WILL be in the Tag League however. Hopefully they announce them soon. Not that I am looking forward to typing up all those lineups, uggghhhh…
